Georgia Tint Law FAQ's

Everything you need to know about Automotive Window Tint Laws in Georgia

What are the current car window tinting laws in Georgia?

Tinted Windows are legal in the state of Georgia, but automotive window tinting is regulated.

You can have protective window film installed on your car, truck or SUV, but bear in mind that there are regulations in place that will only allow you to have film that is the legal limit.

If you get pulled over by police officers, and you do not meet the state requirements, you can be fined for the infraction.

Going too dark looks fairly obvious, and most officers of the law can tell you may not be legal just by looking at the window tint on your vehicle. This gives them "probable cause" to pull you over.

Illegal Window Tint Can Cost You!
It can be an expensive proposition if you go past the legal limit with the film you select. Not only do you have to pay a fine, and go to court, you will have to remove the old film you purchased, and install new film that meets the state's criteria.

Easily several hundred dollars out of pocket could be the end result. Keep this in mind when you are selecting window film for your automobile.

How Is darkness of automotive window tint measured?

Window tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%).

In Georgia, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Here's what you need to know:

- Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
- Front Side Window Tint Must allow more than 32% of light in.
- Back Side Window Tinting Must allow more than 32% of light in.
- Rear Window Auto Tint Must allow more than 32% of light in.

Trucks, Vans & SUV Window Tint
- Only the front door tinting is regulated on these vehicles.
- You are allowed to go as dark as you would like on all the windows behind the front 2 doors.

How Reflective can car window tinting be in Georgia?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting films contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.

Back Side Windows
Back side window tinting films must not be more than 20% reflective
